Donald Henry Carlin
Until you have a flat tire or run out of gas, the road less traveled seems like a grand idea.
Who knows where you will end up in the journey of life. I always knew I was going to college. After reading Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring I wanted to be an oceanographer. My path quickly changed when I realized I was several years away from finding a job that would pay my bills and support my wife and son. I chose to take a parallel path and became a biology teacher. At least that's what I thought I'd be. My first teaching job was in Saudi Arabia; teaching general science and math to middle school students. I followed this path for several years before deciding on a completely different route, administration.
I became a principal and a superintendent in Arizona. Being an administrator was challenging, but interesting work. I wasn't too sad to leave administration in Arizona for a second tour in Saudi Arabia; maybe I could finally teach biology. But as fate would have it, I ended up teaching middle school history and English about as far away from my major and desire to be an oceanographer as I could get.
Back in Saudi Arabia, I decided to get a second masters degree. I wanted a masters in Education Technology from Northern Arizona University and could get this degree online. Political unrest in the Middle East lead us back to the States. My wife went first and found a job with CCSD. I followed a year later. It was easy finding a middle school science position with CCSD in 2005. However, with a degree in educational technology and a burning desire to teach technology, I shifted to computer applications in the middle school.
I quickly discovered the power of technology in the classroom. At the same time I noticed few teachers had the skills to effectively use the technology in the classroom. I set myself upon a new career path, becoming an ECS. As an ECS I am able to assist teachers and students apply technology in the classroom. In addition to working with teachers as an ECS, I taught part time for Touro University; teaching CTE technology classes both face to face and online.Recently a new trend started in education, the blended classroom. I see many possibilities for teachers and students in a flipped or blended classroom. Helping students and teachers adopt and adapt to the blended classroom is my new goal as an ECS and technology teacher.
Whether it is oceanographer, biologist, teacher, or ECS, I am happy with the roads I've traveled in my professional career. I am looking forward to helping teachers apply blended learning in their classrooms because I see the power and usefulness of this teaching strategy. My experience with technology, coaching, and blended learning compliment each other. I feel confident I can assist teachers in changing the way they teach with technology and help students learn. Who knows, I may also help teachers or students travel safely on the road less traveled, the technology super highway.
