I am drawing on my online class with Touro University, CTE 629 D, Software Applications for Productivity. I taught this course, one of six for several years, three face-to-face and two online. The artifacts are from fall 2012. This online course was three weeks long. I used Moodle as the Learning Management System. The course followed the E-CLASS model for online instruction. Students would log in to their Touro accounts to access their class. Students would read information related to the topic, view supporting material, practice the skills, complete the assignments, reflect on the current topic and share their ideas for applying technology tools to achieve student learning.
Before the start of each class, I carefully review the materials, update and refresh resources, add new activities, and incorporated fresh ideas for student collaboration and reflection. As technology changes and new resources become available, existing activities would have eliminated.
Differentiation was achieved by allowing students to modify topics but stay within the guidelines of the syllabus. Students were permitted to modify assignments based on interest and personal needs. Differentiation was also achieved by encouraging students to work on projects that had a practical purpose.
Communication between students in the online classroom was achieved through discussion forums and peer reflection. A goal of group projects and peer evaluation was to increase communication and collaboration between students. Students were encouraged to use the CTE-629 Help forum to ask and answer questions about assignments or procedures. The CTE-629 Help forum was a successful way students to help each other. Of course students were encouraged to contact me via E-mail or by telephone.
