Tier II Classes
After successfully completing Tier I requirements, candidates for Blended Learning Certification must successfully complete three Tier II courses. CCSD offers a variety of classes that provide students with the tools to assist them in developing engaging, motivational for student achievement. Candidates for Blended Learning Certification may choose three the following courses provided by CCSD:
For my purposes and interest, I decided on Flipping the Classroom, Exploring Edmodo, and Introduction to Canvas LMS.
If someone is interested in flipping the classroom, PDE 3156 Flipping The Classroom, this course is a good place to start for ideas and resources. There are many ways and degrees to flip a classroom. A key to a successful flipped class is to understanding the technologies available and knowing how to apply them.
"There is more than one way to flip a classroom! Learn about the flipped classroom and how it can help you differentiate instruction for every student while maximizing class time." Source: CCSD.
My second course was Edmodo, PDE 3147 Exploring Edmodo. To me this course was very important because Edmodo serves as a host for many online activities. Edmodo's site allows the teacher to post assignments, received assignments, grade student work with individual comments, and allow students collaborate with the teacher and other students. All the teachers at Bracken STEAM Academy use Edmodo so some extent.
"Edmodo is a powerful platform that allows teachers to communicate with students and parents, utilize digital workflow (assigning, turn in and grading assignments), provide effective feedback and use digital assessments. In addition, the tools in Edmodo are perfect for differentiating instruction to meet individual student needs. Source: CCSD.
Although I plan to take additional Tier II courses, my final course for certification was Introduction to Canvas, PDE 3218 Introduction to Canvas. Understanding Canvas as a Learning Management System, LMS, is essential for creating online classes. I was familiar with are other LMSs such as Moodle and Blackboard, but Canvas is what CCSD is using. Introduction to Canvas provides learners with the opportunity to learn to setup, manage, and refine an asynchronous classroom.
"The Canvas learning management system (LMS) is a dynamic educational tool that allows content, communication, and assessment to thrive. It really is a blank canvas with a host of user-friendly tools to make setting up a simple course a breeze." Source: CCSD.
- Designing for the Online/Blended Environment (PDE 3155)
- Adding Online Elements to your Classroom (PDE 3107)
- Exploring Edmodo (PDE 3147)
- Flipping the Classroom (PDE 3156)
- Go Mobile: Learning with Mobile Devices (PDE 3157)
- Introduction to the Canvas LMS (PDE 3218)
